Welcome to your Comic Finances workbook, where we’ll explore the wonderful world of planning your finances when it comes to creating comics. There’s a lot to this workbook, and not all it will apply to everyone.

Who am I?

My name is Paul Carroll; I’m a writer and comic creator from Dublin, co-founder of Limit Break Comics, editor of Turning Roads, and a spreadsheet enthusiast. I’m especially fond of making spreadsheets to help people in creative fields manage different aspects of their lives more easily.

What’s in this workbook?

We’ll be exploring several sections of the money behind making comics.

• The art costs of making comics

• The sales required to reach a profit

• Revenue sharing across a team

• Revenue from sales at comic shops

Each is important in realising the cost of your book, so you can plan how quickly you can produce the next one. Generally speaking, this workbook is aimed at people who are working with a team. Solo creators can benefit from the store revenue section, but most of the workbook is aimed at teams. This comes from my own experience of hiring creators to work with me on projects.
